iGaming Advertising Standards Tighten as Social Media Gambling Content Grows

4 min read readBy Diego ThompsonApril 12, 2026

Social media has created significant challenges for gambling advertising regulators worldwide. The informal, user-generated nature of content on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube has made it difficult to apply traditional broadcast advertising standards, and 2026 has seen intensified regulatory activity in this space.

The concern driving much of the regulatory action is the potential for gambling content to reach audiences that include minors or other vulnerable groups. Social media algorithms that optimise for engagement can expose users to gambling-related content based on their interests, potentially including individuals who would not see such content in more tightly controlled traditional media environments.

Influencer marketing has emerged as a particularly contentious area. Gambling operators have used social media personalities with large followings to promote their products in ways that may not always be clearly labelled as advertising. Regulators in several jurisdictions have moved to require that any paid promotion of gambling products be clearly identified as advertising, with appropriate age restriction mechanisms applied to content visible on platforms used predominantly by young people.

Platform-level controls are also coming under increasing scrutiny. Regulators are pushing social media companies to implement more robust age verification for gambling-related advertising and to provide clearer tools for users to opt out of seeing such content. The voluntary measures adopted by platforms to date have been viewed as insufficient by most consumer protection advocates.

The challenge of enforcing national advertising standards on platforms that operate globally remains significant. Content that might violate regulations in one jurisdiction can often be accessed from that jurisdiction without restriction, particularly when it originates from accounts registered in other countries. International cooperation between regulators is seen as essential to addressing this cross-border enforcement gap effectively.
